Overview:

The aim of this project is to finish concepts of a half designed post-apocalyptic weapon and then model the finalised design. As this is an industry brief, a number of limitations have been given. The asset has been set to be used in a semi-styalised first person shooter similar to games such as dead rising and bioshock infinite. With regards to the technical limitations, the asset has to be modelled using no more than 10000 tris and textured using a single 1024 texture sheet.

Being the first project back after a long summer, I decided to go with this project because I believed it would be relatively easy and straight forward to complete. Although I want to specialise in environments, I do enjoy modeling props, another reason why I decided to go with this project.

Research/Design:

With the 3 weeks given to complete this project, I decided what to do with the time on the first day. The plan was to concept ideas and gather reference images for the weapon over two days, the rest of the week would be spent modelling, a day to unwrap and pack and the remaining time to texture. I’m quite confident in my modelling skills, something I can’t say about texturing, with this being the case I decided that the best course of action would be to spend the majority of the 3 weeks texturing.

Out of the concepts that were given to me to create the weapon, I decided to go with the one I believed to have the best silhouette. From here I gathered reference images of what the weapon could be made from and began drawing a few silhouettes of my own. Along with concepting in 2d, I also modelled primitive shapes in 3dsmax as a sort of bash kit to put together the weapon. Not having access to a tablet during these first few days meant I had to jump straight into 3d. Not wanting to waste any time, this seemed like the best idea at the time.  With a couple of these boxed out models completed I took a few screenshots into photoshop and began a photbashing what a final end product could look like. Seeing is that the brief only asks to finish an already established design, I ran through this stage fairly quickly.

I experienced little to no problems when it came to the modelling stage, the shapes that made up the gun were relatively easy to recreate in 3d. This stage and unrawping/packing came down to how quickly I can complete the task.  I did however make a few adjustments to the mesh while modelling, the reason why it doesn’t look exactly like my final concept. Running into problems like how would a person hold the weapon, how does it work, etc. were fixed in the modelling stage. Looking back at the 2d concepts the function of the gun doesn’t make sense, something I fixed during the modelling stage.

Conclusion:

Overall I consider this project to be very successful. I have a solid portfolio piece to show for it and also I’ve learnt the base skills in a new programme I can use for future projects. As the project was to add upon an already established concept I took this as “you don’t need to concept as much” this was definitely my biggest weakness of the project. Not big enough to cause any problems or concerns, but I could have better managed my time. I completed the project a week early, I made the mistake of moving on to my second project instead of working more on this. However, I did create a scene in which I took renders of my gun it, something I believe was definitely needed. I also used this free time to quickly visualise what the gun would look like in a first person shooter. So I guess that my ability to work quickly and efficiently was definitely a positive, as I have more work to show for it in a shorter space of time. Again, I choose to do this project as I would find it relatively easy to complete. This was definitely the case. What I would have liked to have done is maybe set myself more stretch goals, or maybe even a trickier project to work on.
