As you know, last week a completed the modelling/unwrapping stage of the project. The entirety of this week has been used to texture the gun. Being the first project back I decided to use this project as a way to get back into the game, I wanted to use this project to better understand how to use substance painter. With this being the case I set myself my own stretch goals, I hope to have the gun textured 3 different ways.

At first, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I simply imported the gun mesh into substance painter and began messing around with the settings. Didn’t get that much done on the first day, but I did learn a bit more about the programme. The most important thing I learnt was how to project decals onto a model. As the weapon is made from several everyday objects I would need to make sure the labels, etc. looked right to sell the model.

The next few days i used adobe illustrator to create text and simple images that I could then project and paint on the model. Later on in the week I used this method to create stickers to personalise the weapon.

Half way through the texturing stage I began to watch several tutorial videos regarding substance painter, these video taught me several tips and tricks I could use to enhance the texture of the gun. The most notable being the baking options in the programme. Being able to bake a curvature map helped me create a mask to then paint edge-ware over them. I had a few problems with this, but sitting next to people who are also learning the programme helped us to bounce help off each other figuring out the best way to solve a problem. One of the main reasons why I love the new third year labs.

The end of this week I spent polishing and adding the more subtle details to the mesh. This stage wasn’t really concepted, so I decided to just go with the flow and add things that made the model look cooler. I've pretty much finished with this project, I dont want to spend more time doing something I dont really need to do. I'll make myself some strech goals, maybe import into unreal? but I think it might be best to move on. I'll let you know what I did next week.
