WEEK 5: PROPulation

I’ve been having a lot of fun with this environment project. There’s something about making a small space you can call your own that I enjoy. The first week of this project was spent concepting the space. The majority of this stage I spent in 3ds max playing around with different sized boxes until I came up with something I could dress and ship.

Time is the biggest enemy with this project. The idea that I have may have been extravagant for a 3 week project, this being the case, I have been cutting a lot of corners, and my assets are not as polished as I would have liked them to be. For example, making a garden, the foliage would be one of the key assets in the scene but I haven’t spent as much time on them as I would have liked. To speed up my work flow and to create something on a larger scale, I have decided to work with modular building pieces that I can use to create whatever I want. This would mean that I could potentially change the layout of my environment in a moment’s notice.

I have modelled and textured the surrounding building, and also the larger assets that would make up the majority of the garden. The plan for the end of the week is to model several foliage assets that I could then get in engine.

In terms of what the tutors have been saying, they all seem to be quite fond of my idea which is every reassuring the only real crit I’ve been given is to polish all of my assets. I’ve decided that I won’t do this until the last week. The reason for this is that I would rather have a finished environment with ok looking assets than a half-finished environment with great looking assets. I’ve been pushing myself quite hard for during this project so there probably won’t be a need to compromise.

The last thing I’ve been doing this week is messing around with the colour and feel of the environment, below are two shots of the same scene in different lighting. Ive been asking several people to give me their opinion. To choose which one they prefer. Hopefully I’ll make my mind up on which to go for soon.
