Exterior house assets: Complete
Creating assets is no strange task to me, it’s what I enjoy, it’s what I’m good at (I think). I mentioned last week that when working on one thing I sometimes feel myself slow down or lose interest. With creating smaller assets this is no longer a problem. The amount of time spent on one asset is long enough for me to do a good job, but short enough that I won’t lose interest.
This week I began and finished the modelling of the exterior house assets. At the start of the week I drew up a simple assets list of things I could ‘attach’ to the house to give it more character, things like a porch light, a hose, a mailbox, etc. Having gone to America at the start of the year I was able to gather a lot of reference images that I used for this stage.
Fun story, while I was in San Diago I took several pictures of outdoor electricity meters on the sides of people’s houses, some of these people didn’t take too kindly to that. Explaining that you’re gather reference pictures for a game level wasn’t always the best thing to do.
From the beginning, Calum and I wanted our level/environment to tell a story as you explore. For this reason I began to write down small things that could be found on these assets. Small things that can only be noticed if you stopped and examined the asset. Below are the several assets that I modelled and textured this week. Of course some ‘features’ of these assets are subject to change. For example the electricity box has a red X painted on it, the word ‘help’ is also written on the meter. There is an outlining story that will make these relevant, but for now (this stage of the story) I want the players to look for the answers.
