As hopefully the title implies the living room prop game continues. This week, I decided to work on a few of the smaller assets that will build up the overall scene once it is put together. The two main assets of this week are picture frames and books. As these two assets are relatively simple in shape the majority of the time spent on these assets were on the texturing.
Starting with the books, I searched popular books during the 50s,60s and 70s to make sure the titles of the books I found made sense in the context of the game level. For example books like harry potter wouldn’t have been written during this time, but the lord of the rings is fair game.
Another thing I wanted to take into account when texturing these books was whether or not it made sense. As a little nod to the whole spy theme I searched for a lot of books that were somehow related to this theme. Once the original book cover were found and placed on the texture sheet, I went back and edit them slightly to make them my own. Things like adding additional pictures, changing the colours, even changing the name of the books. All together I have just under 30 individual books textured and ready to put in engine.
I followed a similar process with the bookcovers. I searched for images that would fit in a homely 1970s American environment. The biggest problem I ran into during this stage was finding consistent family photos that would make sense in a family home. I tried my best to find similar pictures and even edited a few, but I decided that as long as from distance the pictures look like they belong I wouldn’t spend any more time on this stage. To finish things of with the picture frames I decided to add an additional material slot for the glass over the pictures. I believe that this would make the picture frames that much more realistic.
